A heuristic for judging how cheaply a candidate product (e.g. one surfaced via the Store Rate Method (Recursive Seller-Catalog Mining)) can be differentiated: check whether it is manufactured using expensive batch molds or primarily by manual labor/machines.
A generic or plain-looking existing listing in a niche is only a cheap customization opportunity when the underlying manufacturing process is not mold-dependent. The same generic appearance in a mold-dependent category implies a costlier path to differentiation.
Differentiation vs. Race-to-the-Bottom, Visual Differentiation Principle.
