Category Targeting Refine Filters (Price, Rating, Brand, Shipping)

Refine is a filtering step inside Manual Product Targeting (Category vs. Individual ASIN)'s category targeting: once a category is selected as a PPC target, Refine narrows it to a smaller, more winnable subset using up to four filters — brand, price range, review star rating, and shipping (Prime/non-Prime eligibility).

Filters can be combined (e.g., price + rating), but each added filter shrinks the reachable audience — stacking too many risks starving the campaign of impressions. If a refined category campaign gets too few impressions, the fix is dropping to a single filter or loosening the range, not abandoning the tactic.

Net effect: Refine turns broad category targeting into a targeted 'sniping' tool that isolates specific competitors your listing is likely to beat on price or rating, rather than blanketing an entire category.

Don't Refine On Two Axes At Once

Refining a category-targeting campaign on more than one filter simultaneously — e.g. price AND rating at the same time, to show only competitors that are both pricier and lower-rated — can shrink the eligible target pool too far to generate meaningful volume. Refining on a single axis (price OR rating) generally leaves a large enough pool while still improving the campaign's comparative position.

Refine on One Axis Only

When using 'Refine' (not 'Add') to restrict a category-targeting campaign to competitors rated below your star rating and/or priced above your price, stack only one axis (price OR rating) at a time. Filtering on both simultaneously shrinks the eligible target pool too aggressively and reportedly hurts campaign performance.

Application: Finding Switchers by Competitor Attributes

A live audit recommended manual Product Attribute Targeting refined by category combined with competitor ASIN attributes — price, Prime badge, and star rating — specifically to identify 'switchers': shoppers comparing options within a category who might defect from a lower-rated or non-Prime competitor. This pairs the category filter with the Switchers Tactic (Product Targeting by Competitor Star-Rating Gap) logic rather than using either in isolation.
