Dual-Niche Method (Broad vs. Narrow)

A Data Dive niche-building technique for separating category-wide demand from true market share: build two niches for the same product idea, a broad niche covering all styles and materials, and a narrow niche containing only competitors matching your own specific style or format.

The broad niche tracks overall category demand and style-level shifts over time; the narrow niche measures competitive position against only your direct competitors, avoiding the false confidence of comparing yourself to sellers in a different sub-style.

The two niches are also used together: cross-reference where the narrow niche's competitors actually place within the broad niche's top-20 ranking (e.g. canvas-bag sellers landing at ranks 3rd, 7th, 9th, and 15th) to spot ranking gaps — slots in the broad top-20 not held by any narrow-niche competitor — that show where a new entrant could realistically break in. This complements Iterative Niche Narrowing, which narrows a single niche progressively rather than running two in parallel, and depends on sound Data Dive Competitor Set Curation in both niches to be meaningful.
