ACO (Alexa Optimization)

Alexa for shopping is a new AI layer, reaching roughly 100 million shoppers, that sits on top of the Amazon A9 Algorithm and decides whether a product A9 retrieves gets understood, trusted, and selected. Developed by Andrew Bell from Amazon patents, science papers, and hands-on optimization of more than 4,000 ASINs. There is no A10 algorithm — A9 still builds the candidate pool; ACO is additive to A9 SEO, not a replacement for it. A product no query retrieves can never be chosen by Alexa regardless of how well it's ACO-optimized.

Missions (query fan-out)

Bell's core reframe: a single shopper query fans out into a family of related searches by room, style, budget, material, recipient, and use case (e.g. 'metal wall art for my living room' branches by room/style/budget/material/recipient/use). A listing that only ranks for one keyword misses the mission entirely.

The seven ACO moves

  1. Noun phrase optimization — stack highest-volume search terms into natural noun phrases around 75 characters ('large modern metal wall art for contemporary bedroom') instead of stuffing isolated keywords, so Alexa can reason over human language.
  2. Semantic bridging — connect the product to meanings the shopper never typed: rooms it fits, occasions it serves (housewarming, anniversary), who it's for, and what style it matches.
  3. Inference optimization — map features to outcomes (genuine leather → luxurious feel → elevates the room → ages with character) across lexical, syntactical, semantic, and contextual levels, so the listing is inferable into situational queries like 'large black metal wall art under $100 for a living room.'
  4. A9 keyword work (retained) — keep doing standard A9 keyword optimization; it still builds the candidate pool ACO selects from.
  5. Query planning optimization / mission map — build a per-ASIN mission map (core product, primary/secondary shopper missions, recipient, context, hard constraints, soft preferences, proof points, comparison angles) to see how many Alexa-generated searches the listing can be found by and truthfully win.
  6. Attribute field completion — fill every structured attribute field (size, material, room, compatibility); missing fields cause exclusion before scoring even starts, not a scoring penalty. Register the brand to control 'product truth.'
  7. Product page coverage — Alexa indexes nearly the entire PDP (title, bullets up to 10 for brand-registered sellers, description, native A+ text, lifestyle images with and without text) plus third-party content on the open web, so a review outlet's copy can win the citation over the brand's own listing if it's better written.
